I’m trying to get in a headspace where watching a movie that’s a commercial makes me feel.. less than positive and Barbie wasn’t it for me. But then when I think about the movies about the Air Jordans or the beanie babies I’m almost seething with anger that this is what people enjoy seeing. Documentaries as commercials as movies.

Women get screwed over so badly from the get, periods and fucking menopause????? Jesus Christ. And I’m one of the lucky ones who have PCOS and PMDD and had to hospitalize myself in 2019 after bleeding for 3 months and having suicidal thoughts. I felt like I was going crazy.

Love this episode. Glad Karen is back. I love the banter between everyone.

I think maybe I'm just too advanced. At no point have I ever thought a movie wasn't selling me something. I always thought it was so weird how mad people got about product placement in movies. Like a 7 Eleven soda machine in Transformers doesn't piss me off. Also the entire movie is about selling me some toys I used to play with as a kid. I guess I'm just used to it.

(Look I'm in your boat 1,000% - I'm just trying to see it from others' POV. When I turn on the TV I'm signing up to be sold stuff... Okay! I love buying stuff!)

No doubt. Everything is bullshit and we will never escape capitalism. Just carve out joy where you can.

It reminds me of this episode of Game Theory where we talked about sports washing. Sports washing is powerful corrupt interests putting on sporting events that fans love so as to make their image less disgusting to people.

But the conundrum with the episode was this: If we're making a piece about how sports washing is bad then that means sports washing doesn't work. How else would we have 10 minutes worth of shit to talk about?

Unless we at Game Theory truly think we are the only people in the world smart enough to understand that Saudi Arabia buying a soccer team doesn't mean it's okay for them to kill journalists, then we're just jacking ourselves off for being sooooo much smarter than everyone else.

But of course Chemda is right. It's a very good subversive ad for Mattel. And it's also a great movie that shits on Mattel. It's like a roast to me. I laughed at Trump being roasted but it never made me like him.

I agree with everything Rod said here, thank you for this!

I lived in communism until I was 12 and it was shitty, because it’s still people who practice it. It didn’t work.
In Germany we have „soft capitalism“ and I think it’s as good as it gets.
Meaning, at least we have a social security net in addition to all the consuming.
