This post is about tipping. Mail carrier tipping. (The guest was so great. Bring her back soon.)

Keith must have had bad experiences with his postal carrier. I worked as a letter carrier for 7 years and the official position of the Postal Service has always been not to tip your carrier at Christmas. Not to allow customers the opportunity to show their "gratitude" over the job you do for them every day for a year always seemed a little shitty though. I have found people across income levels love to show appreciation however they can. For most people it's cash. I delivered to a mostly Eastern European immigrant community and one woman once gave me some of her frozen dinners and an orange to show appreciation for something. Sure, it's part of the job, but, the point of a tip is appreciation. I felt bad taking the items but it's more gracious to accept someone's appreciation than to refuse it. I guarantee you that carriers treat customers who tip much better and take better care of them. And don't get crazy thinking mail carriers make bank at Christmas.

I voted 'yes' on the poll because I doubt this guy is someone who doesn't want to work. He's been there 24 years, clearly he's invested. To just fire him for not refusing someone's gratuity is an inane consequence. I have a feeling the guy's union brokered the deal for early retirement because being fired was a bit excessive. Given the option I'm sure the guy would rather be working than collecting early retirement...(which he helped pay into, btw.)

No shit. That's my point.

And they don't treat tippers better as much as they simply treat non-tippers worse.

It's a shakedown. I tip every December because I HAVE to.

Point taken. I generally cared about the job I did. It usually takes an outside view to remind me that most carriers are shit. Ha.

Edit: Ok, I don't think that wholly true. There's a lot of good carriers and just as many shit carriers.

Immigrant parent revelations = great episode

Especially Chemda's gasp realisation of the similarities with the ethnic parents.

You probably thought Newman was the good guy in Seinfeld. Tipping mailmen is a scam that you either have to buy into or suffer having shitty service.

For pointing out that it's a scam? I can't always afford to tip the mailman and he would know cause he kept all my bills for two weeks after the post date.

People tell me it must suck to live in the midwest. I respond by being confused when they talk about having to tip their mail carrier.

Not much of a perk but I guess it's something.
