3739: Just Smart Enough w/ Chuck Nice
StarTalk’s Chuck Nice joins KATG for the first time and talks about the scariness of space and the intellectual depths of scientists such as Neil deGrasse Tyson. The trio also discusses Israel, Palestine, and Hamas as well as America's new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and his son being pornography accountability buddies. Also, Keith recalls calling up The Radio Chick to be part of Survivor: Harlem, and he reminds you how to win Daylight Saving Time.

I don't know how to answer the poll. Arrrgh. I LOVE space but it IS big and boring!
Chemda raises a good point: Who did your people kill? I want to open that discussion by talking about an ancestor of mine who participated in the Black Hawk Wars that happened between Mormon settlers and native people. The thing is, he came from Scotland in 1850 to join the Mormons in "Zion." They did the whole "walk across the plains" thing and eventually, he would instrumental in expanding Mormon colonization in the West. The Black Hawk Wars were the result of Mormon expansion onto lands they saw as empty, but actually weren't. A lot of mythology as emerged about "pioneers" and what that means, a lot of it being constructed within Mormonism. It's been easy to shrug off because I'm not Mormon, but the fact of the matter is, that is part of my heritage, regardless. The thing that is toxic about religion is it gives you a reason to hate, etc. that is beyond this world and never something you actually have to deal with in the here and now. I can appreciate what my ancestors went through while acknowledging that they went from being subordinate to a larger culture (the English) to making cultures subordinate to them. There are so many uncomfortable truths in that which need to be dealt with and it starts by recognizing that shit always happens. It doesn't have to define you in the present, but it will if you ignore it. So long as the consequence/result of your action remains other wordly, you'll always have a pass in the now. I'm glad Chuck was able to point of why I hated when Bill Nye was on Star Talk. NDT and Bill Nye was insufferable! Arrrgh. |

The gov’t of Israel has not been kind to the Palestinians. That causes push-back, hence the need for bomb shelters in the homes of innocent people like Chemda’s parents. And that all traces back to other governments. Innocent Israelis and Palestinians are suffering as a result of extremism on both sides. It’s a terrible situation.

Idea for a new game:
You have to talk about the middle east without Chemda getting mad. Me: people shouldn't kill each other Chemda: who is people Apia? Who? Me: first Me. I shouldn't. |

Ever since I heard Keith speak about saving up his daylight savings hour, I've been going around and telling people the same thing. I just told my colleagues about this concept yesterday.
I always tell them "my friend" came up with this concept while thinking about Keith, haha |
