Talking about tips. At least I think they were, the first bit of the show was a bit of a mind-fuck.
I think the American model of paying 10-20% for basic service and then more if it is good is the fairest way to do things. I like the fact that someone who gives fuck-all effort gets fuck-all tip. That seems more fair that you all get the same regardless of effort. |

I used to work in retail and I get wound up when I was putting in the effort where some co-workers would not, yet we all get paid the same. I'd rather see 20% for trying and for no effort you get no cash. Of course there's always going to be the moron you bend over backwards for and yet gives nothing but I imagine that's rare. |

You give no fucks = You get no cash-money. Seems fair to me. Here, you (can) do a half-arsed job and get a half-arsed wage. I'd rather see rewards for hard work to incentivise staff. |

Without tips I'm sure most of these service workers would get just a bit more wage, that wouldn't begin to make up for it. So waiters etc. would be a less desirable job with higher turn over. Basically imagine waiters at decent restaurtants having the customer service of fast food employees.
And this is partly why US has better customer service then Europe, though its probably mostly cultural. I'm normally not much of a flag-waving American, but the US can legimately claim to have better customer service. Refer back to the episodes of Chemda complaining about France. |

U.S - Put in Effort, get rewards. Europe - Do the bare minimum required by your boss. Get the bare minimum required by the government. I suppose you could always have you sights on being Mr. Fancy Pants waiter at the Ritz and get a better wage, but that still leaves me stuck with Mr. Give-no-fucks at my local restaurant. At lease on the American model he might be tempted to put some effort in once in a blue-moon. |
