i stick to ma'am, sir, or sweetheart for strangers and friends. i use these petnames all the time, so it comes out in my typing occasionally.
but where i'm from, ma'am, sir and sweetheart are appreciated when used correctly. (noncreepy)

There's a difference between using Ma'am like a gentleman and using Miss to get someone's attention. Sure, you can use Miss playfully, but in that sentence, it was extremely douchy. Context is huge.
