I tried the whole "I'll only smoke when I drink" routine but then I just drank more. Then last fall I had a brain hemorrhage and my neurosurgeon was like "yeah you're dumb if you keep smoking" and I was like "ok dude" and I quit cold turkey in the hospital and never started up again. I still have one every couple of weeks though. They're just so damn good.

i've found it's much easier to avoid smoking when I STOP BUYING PACKS.
although cigs are relatively cheap here (marlboro lights < 4.25), the money really adds up. also, i refuse to smoke in my car- which is where i used to do it the most. i really been able to stop smoking as much as i used to, but i still smoke maybe 5 cigarettes a week- more if i'm drunk. which lately i have been. |

I quit smoking April 27th, cold turkey. This is my third attempt, the first was the patch, and the second was also cold turkey.
This time I did the "team" quitting. My girlfriend and I both quit at the same time. I think it helped to have someone call me a dumbfuck when I wanted to go get a pack of cigarettes. A matter of note, this time around I wound up suffering from Shortness of Breath after quitting. Turns out quitting smoking can cause massive anxiety. So now I'm on Xanax. I also started drinking... I don't know if I'm healthier now or not. |

I smoked for several years, then got tired of it and "weened" myself off. I first started by not smoking in the spot that I smoked the most, my car. Then I cut down at breaks and at home. It took some time but I eventually got down to 1 cig a day and gave it up that way. I'm smoking again due to the divorce and bankruptcy and other issues. But I'll quit again someday.
A guy I know quit when he had been smoking for over 40 years. He got this copper bracelet thing as a gift or something and didn't realize that it was making the cigs taste bad and quit that way. I heard that pill is bad for you, I know a bunch of people that were on it and they started to have suicidal thoughts and got off it right away. Find a comfortable way for you to quit and then just do it that way. It's hard as hell, but it can be done.

My experience was catching myself going a long period without a cigarette. I got so caught up with a fun activity that I went about 12 hrs without realizing i didnt have a cigarette or even think about it.
So try to spend time around non-smokers, then when you get distracted enough and you realize you went x long without a cig try to keep that streak going. Its a mind trick, sort of like cheating for a head start. That was nearly 10 years ago, so that 12 hr period has literally turned into 10 years completely smoke free. (not counting occasion ganja use) |
