This book is written from the perspective of a highly educated guy who grew up dirt poor in Florida. It's a very interesting story of self discovery. It's super accessible but also full of collegiate disciplines like: Neuroscience, Sociology, and Behavioral and Evolutionary Psychology.
It's real life with a PhD twist. Highly recommend for anyone interested in drugs, society, cause and affect. |

I just found this thread when I did a search. I've been looking for some recommendations.
Bird Box by Josh Malerman is the best horror that I've read, a lot better than any of Stephen King's more recent work. A woman and her children live in an abandoned house, and have to wear blindfolds if they go outside. That's all you should know about the story before you read it. Skip the reviews. The author is in the band that did the theme song for a show called Shameless. Danielewski's House of Leaves was great, but it's more psychological horror. I don't know if you could read it as an ebook. The way that the type is printed reflects what's happening in the story. I'm looking for more like both of these books. William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist was incredible. It's more about faith than anything else. Bird Box trailer: |

Nice thread find!
I read "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson around Halloween this year, and it really spooked me. She wrote it in 1962, 3 years before her death and at a time in her life when she was extremely agoraphobic and not leaving her house, which plays a big part in the story. The book really drew me in, it was unlike anything else I've read. The best scifi I've read recently was "The Three Body Problem" by Liu Cixin. Chinese historical/science fiction. It won the hugo award in 2015. It's got video games and computers and murder and aliens and science and secret chinese military bases on clifftops and all sorts of shit. |

#SelfPromotion
Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I wasn't sure where else to post this and definitely wasn't going to start a whole new thread for it. As I might have mentioned before, I write for both fun AND profit, and the fun part takes the form of sci-fi/fantasy stories. I know, what a nerd right? Anyway, if you also like these types of story, please consider subscribing to this page on FB: https://www.facebook.com/therealpjm/ Feel free to share the page with anyone you think would like it. Feedback is very welcome! Last edited by theycallmepyro; 06-12-2018 at 03:28 AM. Reason: Link |

Man, I can't think of the last time I read a book for fun! Ever since college (and as a result getting away from my childhood home), I've been entertaining myself in other ways
![]() But this list is pretty motivating! Maybe I'll take some time off from my usual leisure activities and read a bit more :P |
