And the pedestrians react to situations accordingly, they walk around the city having conversations with each other or on cell phones, they have jobs, and act hilariously as you nudge them around with your vehicle. And to talk about bland dialog, I can't believe you can ignore the absurd conversations in Oblivion. I laughed out loud several times watching my wife play that game.
The caves aren't generated randomly - Oblivion plains are which is a flaw.

Do the pedestrians have jobs? Or is there a businessman, a punk kid and a sassy bitch with minor differences?

Are you anti-fantasy setting?

Also, if by "watching my wife play that game" means you haven't actually played the fuckin' game, you really can't talk. I love GTA and The Elder Scrolls, and I have thoroughly digested the latest effort for both, while you're just another goon who doesn't like fantasy period, so have arbitrarily decided that Oblivion is wooden and sterile.

I'd rather listen to a whole room full of people talk about mudcrabs forever than get called one more FUCKING TIME to go bowling.

If I wasn't watching a cutscene in GTA IV, I was bored out of my skull, and halfway through that game I was bored out of my skull even then.
I HAVE played Oblivion, but gave up about 5 or 6 hours into the game. Nothing, and I mean nothing, about that game grabbed me. The story was boring, the characters were boring, the setting was boring, etc. And while I'll agree the phone calls from friends were annoying as hell, I was only referring to NPCs in general, which I believe the pedestrians in the game fall under. I always assumed they probably had jobs or destinations to travel to, though they never seemed to follow a predetermined path depending on what time of day it is. I seem to remember a game on Dreamcast that did the same damn thing years ago... And no, I'm not anti-fantasy either. I'm just anti-generic.

I think you are anti-fantasy but there's nothing wrong with that. You just use game escapism to explorer what you could do in the world around you where as others want to explorer a different world entirely. What fantasy games have you enjoyed?

And if you are anti-generic I think it's more of a disappointment - What wrong with a well executed traditional formula?

He doesn't like the game you like, I don't think you're going to convince him by suggesting it's formulaic.

I'm not trying to convince him to like it. He can like what he likes. I just don't think he's right about himself when he says he doesn't like generic. I think he means he dislikes fantasy but doesn't want to admit that cause people are going to say he's bias when commenting on the game overall - which I don't feel he is.

That why I asked what fantasy games he liked inorder to try and prove myself wrong.

You know?

You know?

Trying to create a unique fantasy setting and ending up close to other fantasy settings is a whole hell of a lot more interesting and respectable than purposefully replicating an existing city.

Besides, I didn't like Oblivion in the first 5 or 6 hours I played it. But I give things fair chances and don't talk about how games look shitty when I watch other people play them. Fuck, GTA IV was fucking boring in the first 5 or 6 hours. You spend half the time with no weapons, no car, just driving around and talking to your loser ass cousin. It really only gets going when their apartment burns down, which is pretty far into the game. If we want to break down the first 5 or 6 hours of both games, Oblivion kicks the crap out of GTA IV. At least in Oblivion I could have a really intense battle with an Imperial guard and loot his armor and set off to explore if I was bored with the story; GTA just forces you to slog through working for a fat guy running a taxi service. And if you don't like it, you can't even fight the cops because the most you have is a fucking pistol.

The pedestrians and NPCs in GTA don't actually have jobs or destinations, they just wander in the same boring ass fashion every other GTA pedestrian has ever done. GTA's NPCs have always done dumb shit like randomly park cars after driving in circles and then they just walk around pointlessly.

Oblivion's NPCs, however, DO have jobs, DO have destinations, DO have routines. You're being purposefully arbitrary if a couple conversations about mudcrabs makes the dialog worse than the heaps of boring ass shit GTA IV characters whined at me while I drove them around like a BITCH, and if the PAINFULLY generic mission structure is worse than Oblivion's dynamic open world.

Direct2Drive's 'Best of Indie games' bundle is on sale and it's a damn good deal. You get:

Cogs
Defense Grid: The Awakening
Democracy 2
The Path
Zeno Clash

For £11.50 or $17.75. Hell, it's worth it just for Zeno Clash.

We'll miss you. Seems to be a few closeted Eve players here, I never did get around to that trial.

I love both Oblivion and GTA 4. GTA 4 is better polished and has much better physics and story telling. Oblivion has deeper game play mechanics with an environment that begs to be explored from head to toe.

As for originality and NPCs I would say its a wash. One rips off of every Scorrsecce movie and the other rips off of Lord of the Rings. In my opinion, with video games quality always trumps originality.

GTA4 Npcs move and react to the environment more realistic, but Oblivion's NPCs actually have real roles in the world and have dialogue.

I dont judge either of you for not liking each game as much as I do

BUT

I hope GTA4 haters give it a second chance via DLC (which is WAY better than the main story)

I hope Oblivion (or fallout3) haters give Oblivion 2 (Morrorwind 5) a second chance. Or if you do want to give Oblivion a second chance start with the assassins guild.
